Save power & Carry on
LED Lighting
The light-emitting diode(LED) has proved to be one of the most energy efficient lighting technologies. LED light bulbs are more durable, offer better light quality and have a longer lifetime than other types of lighting. Using at least 75% less energy than your normal CFL bulbs, LED is a boon to the world of energy efficiency. A traditional light bulb consuming 60 watts of power, produces the same amount of light as an LED bulb that consumes only 10 watts. This huge difference in power consumption saves a lot of energy and helps reduce your utility bills.
Organizations such as the Nepal Electricity Authority had introduced their plan to get hold of 20 million LED bulbs to help eliminate load-shedding from the country. Hence, it is vital for the whole population to be aware of the higher efficiency of LED bulbs and decide to switch to it. Moreover, the cost won’t be a burden as, with advances in technology, prices of LED bulbs have lowered significantly.
Automation
It is human nature to forget. This inevitable habit can result in unwanted energy consumption in a household. However, what’s there to fear when you can automate all of your electrical appliances. Through automation you can turn off your devices using your cell phones, laptop etc. This will save you a lot of power which would be otherwise draining unnecessarily to the electronics. Hence, you won’t have to worry too much if you left your curling iron on, as you can easily switch off the power supply using your mobile devices. This way, you can conserve energy along with adding another layer of security in your smart homes. Make your homes and offices smart.
Vampire Power
You will be surprised how much energy is being drained by you leaving it plugged electrics on in your power socket. Find out how you can avoid this. One of the easiest way is to use smart power strip and switch each power off as you don’t use it.
Water & Electricity’s Love Story
Water is a scares resource and will get more so throughout the world. Hence, one needs to use water not just sparingly but optimize its use. Because, not only is water as a resource is getting low but every time you use water you are also spending on electricity to get that water pumped to your homes, offices, factories, municipalities.
For every liter of water you need in your home, double the amount has to be pumped to you. Because of leakage in the water systems, pipes, by the time the water reaches you, you just get half of it.
The most efficient ways to reduce the electricity being spent, optimize the use of water. For example,
- Use automation to shut the pump when your tank fills. It is a very simple technology
- Buy faucets that has aerator and are energy efficient
- When you don’t need a long flush, use a short one. If you have old flushes that doesn’t have the option of two types of flushes, submerge something heavy like a brick in your flush
- Use/buy water efficient appliances for washing clothes, toilets, taps etc.
Home Entertainment
Appliances for home entertainment can consume a lot of energy if you are not using the right appliances that are smart or energy efficient. In addition automation can help you make optimum use of the system by switching it off if there is no activity for a long time or regulating the volume.
Appliances for Heating & Cooling
Heating and cooling has become the most important talk in EE.
Shift load from high demand to low demand hours
We tend to use the most number of electrical appliances during certain hours of the day. In most households such peaks hours usually consist of the morning and evening. In between these two peak times, very little energy is used as most of the family members are either not present in the house or if they are they have not given it a good thought.
In Nepal, high demand hours have led to overload in the energy supply system causing power outages. To prevent this from happening, households can shift certain activities to the low demand hours. For example, when at home during afternoons (low demand hour), we can use the washing machine, instead of using it in the mornings or evenings. This way, there will be manageable load on the energy supply system throughout the day which will surely eradicate short term load shedding happening nowadays.
